The image of the Celtic Cross has always drawn me to it even before I knew what it meant, and even before I traveled to Ireland and then to Wales (Celtic Countries).
Most, if not all, Christians know that the symbol of an empty cross refers to Jesus’ crucifixion. It’s empty because the cross/death couldn’t hold him. He was raised from the dead. Therefore we celebrate.
Many churches have crucifixes over the altar, on which is an image of the suffering Christ. That version of the cross signifies the Son of God’s great, unsurpassing love, acceptance, and sacrifice for us.
The Celtic Cross is different from either of those. Yes, the cross is still there, but there is a complete circle that surrounds it from just below the horizontal piece to just above it. That’s what draws me to it. That’s what gives me peace and the sensation of completeness and wholeness.
The circle of the Celtic Cross encompasses the whole world in the redemption of God’s Creation, including all of us. We are redeemed. Totally encompassed in God’s Redemption of the World in His Great Love. Therein lies my peace.
What am I to do because of it? Love Him back. Do my best to reverence the integrity of who he made me to be, asking his help to grow into that creature. And then reverence the integrity of who he made each one of you to be. Therein lies the secret to never intentionally abuse anyone. I want to live in such a world. Wouldn’t you like to live there?
